The statue of Sissi at the Quai du Mont-Blanc was covered with paint on Sunday. Unknown people painted white, blue, red – the colors of the Russian flag – the monument erected in homage to the Empress of Austria, Queen of Hungary, assassinated in Geneva in September 1898 by an Italian anarchist.

At the foot of the statue, we discover a mysterious inscription which indicates the misdeed. “CH+RU, united in resistance”. It comes with a date: June 16, 2024.

The vandals signed their act. A mysterious CH+RU.

On the fan Elisabeth is holding, another inscription: Love CH with a red plastic bottle cap on which we can read “made in Switzerland”.

The “Tribune de Genève” contacted several city departments, which indicated that they were not aware.

The statue of Elisabeth of Austria was inaugurated in 1998 on the occasion of the centenary of her death. This bronze Elisabeth Empress of Austria (Sissi) was made by the Scot Philipp Jackson who has to his credit numerous statues of personalities, notably Mahatma Gandhi, King George VI and Mozart.
