Stormy weekend in Quebec: it continues on Sunday

Saturday was a tumultuous day: storms and heavy downpours were unleashed in many places in Quebec. This unstable time is not over. Details.

In short :

  • Impressive amounts of rain;

  • Like a copy and paste for Sunday;

  • Patience will be rewarded.

Nearly 100 mm of rain

Since Thursday, a low pressure trough has generated showers over a large part of the province. These showers, torrential at times, have already dumped significant quantities of rain: in Parent, in Mauricie, nearly 90 mm fell.

In Charlevoix and Haute-Gatineau, certain areas received up to 70 mm of rain. As for the metropolitan region, around thirty millimeters have fallen up to the time of writing these lines.

Dangerous road conditions

Saturday morning was not easy: in the Capitale-Nationale region, heavy rain showers gave motorists a hard time. Shortly before 9 a.m., road conditions were difficult, particularly on Autoroute 20 in Lévis. However, the roads are not the only ones to have suffered the wrath of the system. Around 2 p.m., Lake Théodore in Val-Morin became under surveillance due to the rising water level.

The risk of thunderstorms will drop a notch during the evening of Saturday, due to the drop in energy available in the air. However, storm cells could develop in places.

Sunday under storms

The cold bubble, which has taken Quebec by storm since Thursday, has not said its last word: there will be a potential for storms during the day on Sunday.

THUNDERSTORMS SUN2

This risk of thunderstorms will be similar to that of Saturday and all regions of Quebec are affected. It is the cold air at altitude which causes this instability which has lasted for the last few days. Note also that the temperatures expected on Sunday will be very modest: a maximum of 19°C is expected in Montreal, or 5°C below seasonal norms.
