The Court of Appeal confirms the conviction of police officer Isabelle Morin

Police officer Isabelle Morin, who caused the death of a motorcyclist on the Laurentian highway, has just lost her case on appeal.

The highest court in the province thus confirms his conviction for dangerous driving causing the death of Jessy Drolet in September 2015.

The Court of Appeal concluded that Judge Frank D’Amours, who found her guilty, did not commit errors meriting overturning the verdict.

Describing the judgment as “careful”, the court rejected one by one the grounds of appeal raised by the policewoman’s lawyers.

Facts

On the evening of September 10, 2015, traffic was moving in the wrong direction on a portion of the Laurentian highway due to work. Rather than making a detour, the officer attempted to cross the oncoming lane of the highway, finding herself in the path of the motorcycle driven by Jessy Drolet.

The latter had no chance, hitting the patrol car head-on. The victim was returning from his mother, who had given him a gift to mark his 38th birthday.

Satisfied mother

I’m holding back so as not to cry, that’s what I wanted, reacted the victim’s mother when Radio-Canada informed her of the Court of Appeal’s decision. Marlène Drolet followed all stages of the long legal process. After being acquitted during a first trial, the police officer was found guilty after a second.

I’ve been thinking about my boy for nine years and I will always think of him, confided Ms. Drolet. Since the tragedy, she has had a photo of her son published in the newspaper every September, in his memory.

This year, in September, I’m going to put his photo there, it’s going to be the last time. Because there, everything is settled.

However, the legal process is not yet over. Isabelle Morin, 53, appealed the sentence.

The Quebec City police officer was sentenced to one year in prison last April. She was released on conditions pending the decision of the Court of Appeal.

The Court now orders him to surrender to prison authorities no later than June 5, to serve his sentence.

Morin, on the other hand, appealed the sentence, since she wishes to serve it in society. The Court of Appeal will decide next week whether she can wait in freedom for this issue to be decided.
