Senegal: Bassirou Diomaye Faye refuses to join…

In Senegal, if the question has often been the subject of debate, national and international opinion is now fixed.

Senegal will not join the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

Visiting Bamako in Mali on Thursday May 30, 2024, this was underlined by the new elected Senegalese president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

Indeed, the new Senegalese head of state was on an official visit to his Malian counterpart, Assimi Goïta on Thursday May 30.

At the end of their meeting, Bassirou Diomaye Faye reaffirmed his support for the Malian people. It was also an opportunity for the Senegalese leader to speak out regarding the potential integration of Senegal into the AES.

Senegal will remain an active member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

This is what the Senegalese president declared without tongue in cheek when facing his counterpart from the Malian Republic.

“Senegal does not plan to join the AES in the coming days”, declared Bassirou Diomaye Faye during his visit to Mali.

For Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the priority at the moment is reconciliation and unity within the sub-regional organization, ECOWAS.

Moreover, he affirmed that he “do not despair of seeing ECOWAS start again on new bases which will avoid the situation we are going through today”.
