Gas leak from GCT Gabès units: The ”Stop Pollution” collective calls for an investigation

The collective “N7eb N3ich (We love to live)… Stop Pollution” called, in a press release made public on Saturday May 18, 2024, for the public prosecutor to open an investigation to determine the circumstances and responsibilities of a gas leak, noted in the industrial zone of Gabès, which caused cases of fainting and suffocation among 15 students of the Ibn Rochd college in Ghannouch (governorate of Gabès).
The movement called on the regional health directorate to enlighten public opinion on the state of health of the people affected by this incident, and to monitor their condition, taking into account the dangers of these gases on the health.
The collective also called on the authorities concerned to implement the decisions taken previously, in particular the decision of June 29, 2017, relating to the dismantling of the industrial units of the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT), and to put an end to the policy of promises and delays adopted in the handling of this important issue, we read in the same press release.
To this end, the collective called on civil society in Gabès to coordinate to determine the next necessary protest movements, in order to put an end to “environmental crimes committed against the region”, and to demand the immediate dismantling of the GCT’s industrial units.
