Imminent risk of overflow in Bakel, the government warns
The press release explains that the Société d’Exploitation de Manantali et de Félou (SEMAF) had to begin water releases after rapid filling of the Manantali dam reservoir. Currently, the release flow reaches 1,993 m³/s, with a forecast of 3,000 m³/s in the coming days. This measure aims to avoid submersion of the dikes, but at the same time increases the risks of overflowing in downstream areas, particularly in Bakel.

According to information provided by the ministry, the water level in Bakel has already reached 10.70 meters this Saturday, October 12 at 12 p.m., thus exceeding the alert level set at 10 meters. Simulations show that the flow rate at Bakel could reach 4,500 m³/s within five days, a situation described as exceptional, the flow rates observed having not been this high since 1961.

Upstream of the Manantali dam, the flow of the Bafing at the Dakka-Saidou station is currently 3,600 m³/s, a record level. In addition, significant flows are also recorded in Diangola (1,500 m³/s) and Gourbassi (1,165 m³/s), adding to the hydrological pressure on the Senegal River basin.

Faced with these imminent risks, the ministry calls on local populations, as well as those carrying out activities along the banks, to be extremely vigilant. Measures must be taken to protect against possible flood-related damage. The government, in collaboration with the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS), ensures that it is monitoring the situation closely and preparing to intervene if necessary.
