You just have to look at the posters that line the walls of the building adjoining the Geneva Museum of Ethnography (MEG) to hear the echoes of sarodkoras, panting Carnatic flutes and drums child. In 2023, Cape Verde and “the islands of the blessed” were celebrated on an electric blue background and ibiscus flower. THE warm from the small Atlantic archipelago then blew across the City of Calvin like the trade winds.

For forty years now, the Ateliers d’ethnomusicologie (ADEM) have been bringing to our ears the fascinating musical diversity of the world through practical workshops, concerts and the edition of the only French-speaking magazine dedicated to this discipline: The Ethnomusicology Notebooks. For the record, its founder Laurent Aubert, musician, ethnomusicologist and apparently a fine cook, had a taste for elsewhere. He first escorted his Hindustani master Ustad Jamaluddin Bhartiya to the AMR (the Association for the Encouragement of Improvised Music in Geneva) before founding the ADEM in 1983.
