Doctor Boubacar Diémé, head of the outpatient consultation department at the Thiaroye psychiatric hospital, took advantage of his appearance on the morning show Salam Senegal on Radio Sénégal Internationale to sound the alarm on the state of mental health among young girls in Senegal, on the occasion of International Mental Health Day.

He particularly mentioned the increased vulnerability of young girls aged 12 to 15 to mental disorders, particularly depression. These young people are often exposed to violence of different kinds, linked to their biological and psychological status, as well as to social prohibitions. This weight, according to Doctor Diémé, leads to disorders such as mutism and frustration, which negatively impact their development.

Dr Diémé insisted on the need to raise awareness and establish preventive mechanisms in schools, in order to allow young girls to express themselves and prevent abuses before they find themselves in crisis situations. He notably suggested the presence of specialized educators within schools, so that children can find a listening space.

The specialist also recalled that the weight of society, in particular the cultural demand for motherhood, constitutes additional pressure for women, sometimes exacerbating mental disorders.

On the issue of mental health at work, Dr Diémé underlined the importance of a healthy professional environment, insisting on the fact that a balanced and rewarding work climate is essential to maintain the performance and mental well-being of employees. employees. He recommends developing human resources and managing conflicts proactively to avoid stress and its repercussions.
