The decision was taken by the prefect of Alpes-Maritimes. All schools in the Alpes-Maritimes will remain closed this Tuesday, October 8 due to the bad weather forecast.

The measure concerns nurseries, schools, middle and high schools. Not all school transport will run either.

Universities will remain open but a call for caution was made to students.

Downpours expected on the Côte d’Azur

The department has been placed on orange “rain-flood” alert. The alert runs from 3 a.m. tonight until 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, as the region prepares to face a Mediterranean episode.

This rainy-stormy episode requires “special attention”warns Météo , both because of the high intensities expected in a short time near the coast and the middle country, and for the high accumulations expected in the mountains.

Strong storms are likely to impact the coastline and the middle country of the , potentially causing strong accumulations (60 to 80mm) in a short time. In Mercantour and Ecrins, the risk of storms is lower, but the accumulation of rain is significant over time, which could lead to quantities approaching 80 to 100 mm in around ten hours“, further specifies Météo France.

A precedent in 2023

This is not the first time that the Alpes-Maritimes prefecture has decided to close schools in anticipation of a weather event.

On October 20, 2023, almost a year ago to the day, the prefect made the same decision after placing the department on red “rain-flood” alert.
