To resolve the energy crisis in the country, the Guinean authorities initially resorted to the interconnection project of the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS).

It is in this context that the OMVG interconnection line has been activated since April 25, 2024 to allow the transfer of 120 megawatts from Senegal (SENELEC) to the Société Électrcité de Guinée (EDG), announced the Minister of Energy in a press release.

“This initiative offers energy on demand at a reasonable cost, thus contributing to reducing the company’s current production deficit,” underlined Aboubacar Camara before specifying that “the activation of this sub-regional interconnection line now makes it possible to supply all strategic sites and industries, and to significantly improve electricity supply to households during the day.”

In order to curb the energy crisis which is hitting the country hard, added the minister, the Guinean authorities are in discussions with other countries in the sub-region to explore alternative solutions to the current energy situation.

In addition to interconnection, Mr. Camara said that “the government is intensifying its efforts to develop sustainable energy sources, such as solar, thermal and hydraulic power plants, essential for the economic development of Guinea”.
