Early elections unlikely: ‘The Bloc still seems to be the adult in the room’

The triggering of federal elections as early as next week seems very unlikely in the eyes of analyst Philippe-Vincent Foisy.

“I might be a little flat, but I doubt it. [que ça arrive]”, he pleaded on the airwaves of LCN.

Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives, who want to subject Justin Trudeau’s government to a confidence vote as early as next week, will have difficulty seeking support from the New Democratic Party (NDP) and the Bloc Québécois, according to him.

“The Bloc still seems to be the adult in the room right now, able to say, ‘Look, there may be gains to be made,'” he explained.

The sovereignist party also has an interest in postponing the start of the federal election by a few months, since it can still seek gains for the elderly and farmers, who make up a large part of its electoral base.

“If the Bloc is able to see that this can unblock things, then it is worth keeping the government alive for a few more months so that it can be adopted,” said Mr. Foisy.

Towards the official opposition?

Paradoxically, the drift of the left represented by Justin Trudeau and the rise of the Conservative Party of Canada could allow the sovereignist party to reproduce the feat achieved by Lucien Bouchard in 1993, by becoming the official opposition.

“I see a near future, with the results we have seen, in three-way races in Quebec where the Bloc will perhaps be able to sneak into a dozen surprise ridings, where it will be able to get closer to 40, perhaps even 50 MPs,” illustrated the analyst.

“Lucien Bouchard won 54 seats when he became the official opposition in Ottawa. The Conservatives collapsed at the time and the left is collapsing now,” he added.
