EXPOSITION – In Paris, a fascinating retrospective recounts a century of peplums, from the birth of the genre to its decline, including its golden age.
In the grounds of the Pathé Foundation, in Paris, the eye is magnetized by the impressive float of Ben-How . He sits majestically in front of a huge poster of the 1959 epic, signed William Wyler, with Charlton Heston. The two curators of the “Antiquity and Cinema” exhibition, Pénélope Riboud-Seydoux and Stéphanie Salmon, specify: « This unique piece was loaned to us by the Musée Cinéma et Miniature in Lyon. She weighs almost 500 kg. We had the greatest difficulty getting him into the room. »
The idea of orchestrating an exhibition around antiquity at the cinema dates back more than a year, and Gladiator II by Ridley Scott, released last November, has nothing to do with it. « It’s a happy coincidence, smiles Stephanie Salmon. Among the triggers, we were keen to highlight the cinematic treasures of the Pathé Company, which were entrusted to us from 2006. »
