During the end-of-year holidays, Nicolas Sarkozy stayed in the Seychelles. A reckless sharing of photos on social networks by his daughter Giulia, 13, informed the whole Earth. In , some were immediately outraged: How? The former President of the Republic (from 2007 to 2012) was sentenced to wear an electronic bracelet and would he have the right to fly to regions deemed heavenly?

He had the right to do so. A ruling from the Court of Cassation definitively sentenced Nicolas Sarkozy, on December 18, to three years of imprisonment, including one year under house arrest, in the form of an electronic bracelet, for “violation of secrecy of education, corruption and influence peddling”. Reason: Nicolas Sarkozy’s lawyer, Thierry Herzog, allegedly bribed a magistrate of the Court of Cassation so that he would inform them about certain ongoing cases, notably the Bettencourt affair, in exchange for a promotion in Monaco. The judges considered that Nicolas Sarkozy “used his status as former president to gratify a magistrate who served his personal interest”, although said gratification was never offered.
