The movie The universal language (Universal Language) by Montreal director Matthew Rankin takes the next and final step towards the selection of nominees in the Best International Film category at the Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made the announcement in a publication on X on Friday.

Of the 15 films that are still in the running, five will be selected and officially nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Film when nominations are announced on January 17.

The universal language is intended to be an autobiography of its director told in several small absurd stories taking place between Quebec, Winnipeg and Tehran.

This film notably won the award for best Canadian film at the Vancouver International Film Festival.

It was also selected during the Cinematographers’ Fortnight in , where it won the People’s Choice Award.

Director Matthew Rankin was born in Winnipeg, but currently lives in Montreal.

His film was selected in March to represent the country for the best international film award.


Canada is therefore among the fifteen countries still in the running, notably with Brazil, the Czech Republic, Denmark, , Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Palestine, Senegal, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

However, the French film Emilia Perez widely favored to win the prestigious statuette, with 10 nominations for the Golden Globes.

The Oscars ceremony will be held on March 2 at 7 p.m. in Los Angeles.
