We interviewed the American writer and screenwriter James Ellroy (The Black Dahlia or LA Confidential) during the promotion of his latest book. No less than 600 people came to the Limoges Opera (Haute-Vienne) to listen to one of the masters of the noir novel who admits “preferring to stay in the past”. If you missed this appointment, here’s a second chance.

It’s an understatement to say that the meeting organized in the fall of 2024 by the Pages et Plumes bookstore created quite an event! The arrival of the American writer and screenwriter James Ellroy had aroused such enthusiasm that a special signing session had to be added to the one already scheduled.
As a true star of the noir novel, James Ellroy brought together 600 readers at the Opera. The meeting was organized around the publication in French of his latest work “Les Enchanteurs”, the third volume of the Los Angeles quintet (Rivages Noir edition).
The Los Angeles writer, known as much for his novels (37 to date, including, for example, The Black Dahlia or LA Confidential) as for the films based on his stories, is very popular with the French public.
America is ten times bigger than France, and despite that here […] I sell four times more books!
James EllroyInterview with Annaïck Demars, October 1, 2024
Customary to crisscross France to promote his novels, J. Ellroy had asked his publishing house to change the usual circuit a little to present his latest opus. This is how he found himself for the first time in Limoges to the delight of his readers.
True to his reputation, the one who always writes with paper and pen and presents himself as “reactionary and conservative“, assumed”prefer to stay in the past“. He repeated it again during the interview with our journalist Annaïck Demars.
Mister Ellroy has neither a cell phone nor a computer, and is obviously not present on any social network, because he “does not want to weaken [sa] ability to concentrate“.
