Stigman’s Cinematic Pop

Pop-rock

“Stigman” is the name of the solo project of Namur-based François Borgers. Atmospheric pop-rock that draws its inspiration from cinema and literature. His 5th album “Phantom Pains” was released at the end of 2023.

Singer-songwriter, Stigman (named after Ira Stigman’s character in Henri Roth’s work) does everything himself in his home studio. He even goes so far as to shoot and edit the short films which invariably accompany his songs on stage. Because his very largely atmospheric music is intimately linked to the images, to the atmospheres that it evokes.

Thus for “Phantom Pains”, the eponymous title of his 5th album, the images of the clip are shot at the snow-covered Citadel of Namur. Recalling the cover of the album which features a François Borgers child playing in the snow in the late 70s. All the artwork for the album (CD and vinyl) produced in collaboration with the Namur photographer Olivier Calicis is taken from an old family album.

For “Alice and her sisters”, the single from the album, the images were obviously taken in another corner of the world. In Morocco, perhaps… They are the symbol of these countries that people want to leave, for reasons of security, of survival.

Because François is also a guardian for UMs (Unaccompanied Foreign Minors) seeking asylum with us. The text is inspired by his meetings with these young people and their incredibly difficult life journeys.

Stigman gives us a work between pop and rock, at once intimate, raw but also sunny in the end. Always restrained, even when the guitar riffs become more electric to bring out a tension which falls into hovering swirls. As with phantom pain, which always ends up calming down…

L’album “Phantom Pains” is available on Bandcamp, Spotify and in physical format (vinyl and CD) at Juke Box in Namur and Lost in Sound in Liège.
