Singers, actors, influencers, comedians: artists from all walks of life challenge the Head of State in favor of Palestine in a column published by Libération.

235 French or French-speaking personalities unite to ask Emmanuel Macron to recognize a Palestinian state. In a column published this Tuesday, June 4 by Libération, Béatrice Dalle, Leïla Bekhti, DJ Snake and even the Belgian singer Angèle urge the President of the Republic to take “the path of human dignity”.

“How many deaths will it take for France to take a clear and humanist position? How many crimes against humanity?”, they ask in this forum.

“Spain, Ireland and Norway have taken the path of human dignity by officially recognizing the State of Palestine, joining the 143 countries that officially recognize the existence of a Palestinian State,” continue the signatories, among which also include Renaud, François Civil, the influencer Léna Situations, Blanche Gardin and Léa Seydoux. “But France, country of human rights, country of Enlightenment, still does not speak out.”

More than 36,000 dead, according to Hamas

They recall, in their text, the “terrible attack of October 7, 2023”, which caused the death of “more than 1,100 Israelis, mainly civilians, and the hostage-taking of 252 people, of whom 121 are still detained by Hamas “.

Since that day, the Israeli response has left 36,479 dead in Gaza, according to data from the Health Ministry of the Hamas-led Gaza government. The signatories speak specifically of an Israeli strike on Rafah on May 26, in which 45 Palestinians were killed.

Rima Hassan among the signatories

The column, also signed by pro-Palestinian activist Rima Hassan, 7th on the LFI list for Europeans, denounces “a genocide in real time” – a term which is debated – and continues: “We join our voices to tell the world that we recognize the existence of the State of Palestine, not only in response to the current massacre, but in the name of the right of this people to exist.”

The text concludes: “Today, we appeal to the President of the Republic to ask for this recognition. Let us not go against History. Let us not be in the camp of shame.”
