At just 26 years old, Leah, aka @leahstav on social media, discovered she had Charcot’s disease. Five years later, she and her partner Hugo confided in Femme Actuelle about their life as a couple with illness, and their vision of the future. A couple for 14 years, they met at the University of Michigan, in the United States, where they were studying, before finally starting dating when they both ended up in Paris.
“What I liked about Leah was her very beautiful blue eyes,” remembers Hugo. “He’s someone who loves life, who loves doing a lot of things, and like me I’m also hyperactive, it’s true that we complement each other well in that regard,” he adds. For her part, the young woman confides that she also adored the character of her partner: “He is someone with lots of energy, lots of friends, who loves life, and it is important to be surrounded by people who love life”.
After several years of relationship, Leah learned that she had Charcot’s disease in 2019, when she was only 26 years old: “It was a total shock,” she remembers. This serious neurodegenerative disease causes progressive paralysis of the muscles, recalls Inserm. For Hugo, the announcement of his partner’s illness was also “very hard”. “Where it’s a little sad is that it happened at the time when we were really managing to find our life together,” he explains. “We don’t really know what’s coming our way (…)
