In 2023, an 18-year-old British teenager, Jack Constable, was diagnosed with a rare cancer, Ewing’s sarcoma, only a month after he was first told he had a simple ” muscle tear.
Jack Constable, from Taunton in England aged 18, consulted a GP nurse in October 2023 after noticing a sudden lump on his ribs. His mother told the newspaper The Independent that the nurse didn’t even examine her son properly.
She “lifted Jack’s shirt up and she didn’t even touch him or examine him and after two minutes we were outside and she said, ‘Oh, it’s just a torn muscle, don’t do anything what if It’s not going away, come back in eight weeks,’” she explains.
The tumor was the size of a watermelon
But the situation was much more serious. In November 2023, after the lump continued to grow, doctors discovered that Jack had Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that develops in the bones and soft tissues. The tumor, the size of a watermelon, filled his chest cavity.

Since his diagnosis, Jack has endured intense treatment: 14 chemotherapy sessions, 42 proton therapy sessions and a marathon 12-hour operation. Yet his family knows that might not be enough because his cancer is terminal. They hope the experimental treatment available in the United States will offer a glimmer of hope in prolonging Jack’s life.
