A total of 392 deaths have been recorded out of 8,469 reported cases of the measles epidemic since the first epidemiological week until today in Ecuador.

In addition, 247 people died, including several children under 5 years old, following a second epidemic of M-Pox or monkey pox, out of 2,227 confirmed cases in Ecuador. These are the health data from the first epidemiological week to date.

This information was delivered on Wednesday June 12, 2024 by Doctor Nicole Kumbolani Afuwa, head of the provincial health division of Ecuador. She gave these figures on the occasion of the launch of the combined vaccination campaign against poliomyelitis, vitamin A supplementation and deworming with mebendazole.

Doctor Nicole Kumbolani Afuwa calls for the mobilization of the entire community alongside health providers, with a view to intensifying awareness for the reduction of cases of contamination and deaths within the population.

It should be noted that medical care for M-Pox and measles patients remains relatively weak through public medical training. Civil society organizations are calling on the National Ministry of Health and supporting partners to strengthen medical structures with adequate medicines, to save human lives in the face of the two epidemics which continue to cost the lives of the population of the Ecuador.
