The Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital will set up free consultations and screenings this Thursday, June 6, for the detection of cervical cancer.

A month dedicated to screening. Like every year, “Green June” raises awareness about cervical cancer screening. For this occasion, the Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital has set up a screening day, in partnership with the Cancer Screening Coordination Center in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and the Puy-de-Dôme cancer league. This day aims to inform all women about this all-too-common disease. This Thursday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Clermont residents, aged between 25 and 65, will have free, walk-in access to screenings of cervical cancer.

The twelfth most common cancer in women

Twelfth most common cancer in women, according to the National Cancer Institute (INCa), Cervical cancer is responsible for 1,100 deaths per year. According to the Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital, this disease is “ one of the rare cancers for which the prognosis is deteriorating in France, notably with a decreasing five-year survival rate “.

The origin of cervical cancer is due to papillomaviruses (HPV), a family of sexually transmitted viruses which can affect nine out of ten people in France. According to the Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital, the virus is generally of no consequence. However, HPV can “ persist for several years at the level of the cervix and thus cause precancerous lesions. These can disappear spontaneously, persist or develop into cancer ».

1,200 smears and 3,800 HPV tests carried out in 2023

Launched in 2020, “Green June” has one goal: to raise awareness among women to be screened for cervical cancer. In 2023, approximately 1,200 smears and 3,800 HPV tests will have been carried out at the Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital. According to the University Hospital, patients are welcomed all year round to carry out their screening examination, in conjunction with their gynecological follow-up. “In the event of precancerous lesions or proven cancer, patients benefit from treatment by laser vaporization or conization, in consultation or in the operating room depending on the situation” affirms the Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital.

For several years, means of prevention against this disease have been put in place, in particular with the HPV vaccine for children aged 11 to 19 years.
