Les Gougères Vénères, the Auxerre roller derby club is renewing itself

The roller derby club, recently renamed Les Gougères Vénères, in full renewal, is organizing open days on Tuesday July 2, 2024. Accessible to all, they will allow you to try out a little-known discipline.

In Auxerre, the roller derby club is going through a period of change. During the Covid-19 epidemic, the team saw many of its players take off their skates. The team has almost completely changed, and only one veteran remains among the six current members. This is why today, “K.O’n’Ass” is changing its name and looking for new, motivated recruits. Now named the Gougères Vénères, in reference to the famous Auxerre gougère, the “core” players of the team are organizing open days on Tuesday July 2, 2024, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Serge-Mésonès gymnasium, to mark their rebirth .

Menstrual cycle and hormonal contraception: what impact on female athletes?

This session will be animated by the presentation of the sport and by trials with or without rollerblading, in the form of “basketball derby” for those who would not dare to put on skates from the first day. The club’s goal is to highlight this sport, as well as to recruit new members, because a roller derby team must be made up of an average of eleven players, or even more. No particular level is required, everyone can register from 16 years old, with parental consent for minors.

Championing inclusiveness in sport

Passionate about rollerblading since she was little, Lucile Pac has been a member of the Auxerre roller derby club since September, a club created in 2012. This contact sport on quad roller skates was born in the United States in the 1920s. It pits two teams of five players against each other, including a jammer (a player who must do as many laps as possible of the track: the oval roller derby track) and four blockers in opposition to her. “A lot of work on agility on skates is done during training and the players are very well protected,” explains Lucile Pac.

The values of roller derby are cohesion, inclusiveness, self-improvement and feminism. “Everyone is welcome, women, men, transgender people, thin people, fat people…” According to Lucile, roller derby “is a big family”. In addition to being particularly inclusive, this sport allows friendships to be made within teams and even between them. Clubs regularly organize meetings and matches.

Roller derby originated in the 1920s in the United States, in the Chicago area. It was originally an endurance race on a track, open to men and women, a first at the time. The practice has evolved greatly over time, and this sport has become a way for women and certain minorities to defend values and claim a certain freedom.
