Monaco: Robert Calcagno, a mediator serving the oceans

At the end of an expedition bringing together scientists and economic leaders in 2024, Robert Calcagno has just published his “Plea for Antarctica”, “a little-known giant, so distant that we forget how essential it is to the survival of our planet”.

In 2025, the director general of the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco intends to raise awareness of the threats weighing on the “sixth continent” and the urgent need to create marine protected areas.

“Everyone has to go in the same direction”preaches the one who perceives the private sector as “true driving power” of our time in the face of political procrastination, an international scene on which Prince Albert II strives to raise awareness about planetary health in danger.

To raise the curtain of the United Nations Ocean Conference in , Robert Calcagno will be at the heart of the “Blue economy and finance forum” in Monaco, on June 7 and 8 at the Grimaldi Forum, “to welcome business leaders, heads of banks and insurance companies to trigger financing for a more virtuous and protective blue economy”.

Who better than a former campus student to celebrate 20 years of Sciences Po Menton? Director since 2023, Youssef Halaoua intends to bring this anniversary to life all year round. In September, a moment of thanks “to the big family who allowed this adventure to exist” will be organized, and an amphitheater will be renamed in the name of a woman – who we know was a lawyer and Mediterranean. In November, a student show will be offered to the Mentonnais at the Palais de l’Europe. “A birthday also means a gift. We will try to allow a delegation of students to be associated with the United Nations Ocean Conference, scheduled for Nice in June”underlines Youssef Halaoua. Who sees in the 20-year mark the chance to have a perspective on the success of the campus, while many ex-students today occupy great responsibilities in various fields.

As for the ambition for the future, it is twofold: to strengthen the notion of Menton, campus of peace. And anchor the institution ever more deeply in the life of the city.
