Buckingham Palace unveiled a new portrait of King Charles this Saturday, June 29. The monarch appears there adorned with his military medals, on the occasion of Armed Forces Day.

The king in military clothing. The British royal family has unveiled a new portrait of King Charles, the first since his cancer announcement.

In this photograph, taken by Hugo Burnand, who had already produced portraits for the royal family and photographed the wedding of Charles and Camilla in 2005, we discover the monarch in military uniform, displaying his medals of honor. An initiative which is part of the commemoration of the British armed forces, Armed Forces Day. In the image published on X, we see the king sitting in a green armchair holding his sword in his left hand.

A gradual return to business

King Charles announced his cancer last February, nine months after his coronation in May 2023. A diagnosis which led him to curb his official activities. He returned to his official duties in April and participated in the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings. Some see it as a sign of healing.

The year 2024 has been a trying year for the British royal family. After the announcement of the king’s cancer, it was Kate Middleton who revealed that she was suffering from breast cancer, diagnosed after an abdominal operation in January. Princess Anne was also hospitalized for a concussion.
