This Wednesday, June 4, Great Britain kicked off the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the landing with a major ceremony in Portsmouth. It was in this town in southern England that many British soldiers embarked on June 6, 1944 to counter the German offensive in France. The rest of the commemorations will take place in Normandy with French veterans and the government of Emmanuel Macron from this Thursday, June 6. During this great moment in History the sovereign showed great emotion.

The emotion of the king and queen

King Charles III accompanied by Queen Consort Camillia Parker Bowles and also his son Prince William made the trip to Portsmouth. The royal family took their seats in the stands of the event presented by actress Helen Mirren. The Prince spoke first, and behind his desk, he read the letter from British Captain Alastair Bannerman to his wife, the very morning of the landing. Right after him, the king spoke with Queen Camillia at his side. Children’s choir, air show and veteran’s speech punctuated the ceremony. So many demonstrations which deeply moved the royal couple. Queen consort Camillia Parker Bowles was seen with tears in her eyes, and King Charles III could not contain his emotion, wiping tears from his eyes.

The rest of the celebrations in France

Since the announcement of his cancer in February, the king has resumed his activities. After Portsmouth he is therefore expected in France, in Normandy more precisely this Thursday June 6. The King and Queen will travel to Ver-sur-Mer for a tribute at the British Memorial. Prince William will go to the Juno Beach Center in Courseuilles-sur-Mer to celebrate Canadian soldiers. Unlike the king, his wife Kate Middleton, also suffering from cancer, will not be present. In fact, she canceled all her commitments by the end of the year. William will therefore be the sole representative of the royal family at the ceremony which will take place on Omaha Beach in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer on Thursday afternoon with several presidents, chancellors and representatives from countries around the world.
