The return of pilgrims from Mecca to Ivory Coast took an unexpected turn on June 28, 2024.

Of the 619 travelers screened at Félix Houphouët-Boigny airport, 25 tested positive for Covid-19. The Ministry of Health, Public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage revealed these results in a press release sent to Abidjan.net. A positivity rate of 4%, below the disease control threshold, he said, reassuring the population.

Strict measures put in place and increased vigilance

Faced with the resurgence of Covid-19 cases in certain countries in the sub-region, preventive measures were quickly introduced. Since June 24, an information and health control system has been active at Félix Houphouët-Boigny airport to test travelers returning from Hajj and risk areas. This rigorous system made it possible to identify positive cases who were immediately placed in isolation, in accordance with national barrier measures.

Ivorian social networks have recently been invaded by alarmist rumors about a new variant of Covid-19, the “XBB”, supposedly more dangerous than the Delta variant. However, Professor Yahaya Karamoko, a virologist at Nangui Abrogoua University, denied this information, calling it false. According to him, it would rather be the KP.2 sub-variant, less virulent and already present in Europe and Asia. He assures that the current situation remains under control.

Call for responsibility and vaccination

The Ivorian Ministry of Health reminded the population of the importance of systematic screening in the event of symptoms such as fever, cough or breathing difficulties. Compliance with barrier measures remains essential, especially for those affected and those around them. Health authorities are also encouraging vulnerable people to get vaccinated. Vaccines are available and administered free of charge in health facilities.

Reassure without giving in to panic

Despite these new infections, the Ministry of Health calls for vigilance and serenity. It is crucial not to panic, to follow health recommendations and to demonstrate solidarity and collective responsibility to limit the spread of the virus.
