German brands still at the top: here are the best-selling new cars here in 2024

BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Mercedes and Dacia are the 5 brands which recorded the most new car registrations in 2024. Here are the general trends over the past year.

Febiac, the Belgian and Luxembourg Automobile and Cycle Federation, has published the figures for new car registrations, here, in December 2024. Enough to release the final figures for the past year where 448,277 new vehicles were registered, this is 28,000 fewer than in 2023.

As in 2023, four German brands occupy the top of the ranking: BMW, Volkswagen, Audi and Mercedes, in order. The first city records 50,428 new registrations in 2024, practically the same figure as the previous year. Dacia completes the top 5 with 24,465 registrations, followed by Volvo, Toyota, Renault, Peugeot and Tesla, which therefore enters the top 10.

The biggest increases

The prize for the highest increase goes to the Chinese brand Xpeng with an increase of 23,000%. A figure which obviously needs to be qualified since only one car of this brand had been registered in 2023.

Still on the Chinese side, BYD also made a clear jump with nearly 2,500 new registrations, or 2,000 more than in 2023.

Higher in the ranking, we will note, unsurprisingly, the clear increase of Tesla (+ 32%) with more than 5,000 additional registrations. Dacia and Volvo are also on the rise with respective increases of 16% and 13%.

The sharp declines

Overall, all the Stellantis group brands are experiencing a clear decline in Belgium, with Opel in the lead with -30%. Peugeot and Citroën are also suffering with respectively more than 7,000 and 3,500 fewer new registrations.

Mercedes also suffered the loss of more than 3,500 registrations.

Luxury brands

Among the well-known luxury brands, Porsche is particularly doing well with 4,657 new registrations in 2024, or 22% more than in 2023. 152 Ferrari brand cars were registered in Belgium last year, is 9 more than Maserati. Lamborghini then follows with 99 registrations. For James Bond fans, know that there are now 85 additional Aston Martins on our territory.

Utilities

In the utility category, Renault is doing the best with 12,500 new registrations of new vans. Ford, Volkswagen, Mercedes and Peugeot complete the top 5.

In Belgium, electric and hybrid cars together reached a market share of 52.7% in 2024, compared to 48.4% in 2023. 100% electric propulsion is now the second most popular type of engine in Belgium with 28 .5%, behind gasoline (41.7%).
