Bouygues Telecom’s ingenious trick to eliminate internet outages

Bouygues Telecom is launching its “Guaranteed WiFi” service allowing you to never run out of internet at home.

Since the deployment of fiber, internet outages have become less frequent, but with the advent of digital services and teleworking, they are also more impactful. For Internet Service Providers (ISPs), as for their customers, the effectiveness of customer service to ensure the return of service is essential.

Well aware of this, Bouygues Telecom had the idea of launching its “WiFi Warranty» promising to minimize the inconvenience linked to an internet outage. It’s really stupid, but you had to think about it.

A 4G key to support the box

From today, June 24, 2024, new subscribers to the Bbox Ultym Fiber offer will receive, in addition to their internet box and at no additional cost, a 4G key. This plugs into USB at the back of the Bbox and serves as a transparent backup solution since it directly powers the box. No need to change the Wi-Fi of all your devices, they therefore remain connected to your usual box on the same SSID network.

If your internet connection is cut, the Bbox automatically switches to the 4G connection with minimal interruption – Bouygues Telecom assures us that the transition takes place in just a few seconds. The box then displays a “4G” logo to warn the user and the latter receives a notification after 48 hours if the problem has still not been resolved. Just like your fiber subscription, this emergency key has an unlimited amount of data.

Please note that this service is completely free: there are no hidden costs (neither SIM card to purchase nor additional package to pay). Only downside for the moment: at present, this service is reserved for new customers. Bouygues nevertheless assures us that it is working to offer it to current customers.

Useful even on vacation

In addition to this solution to avoid internet outages, this 4G key is also useful when you leave your home. You can unplug it and take it with you, it will then serve as a 4G mobile key to connect your different devices. Allow around 8 hours of battery life.

Small clarification however: when using it on the move, this 4G key is limited to 50 GB per month. Beyond that, the flow is restricted.

We regret that Bouygues is restricting itself to 4G while 5G networks are being deployed very quickly in France. According to Christophe Bortoli, Operational Marketing Director and Terminals at Bouygues Telecom, “this choice was made to have a solution that covers almost 100% of the population (99% 4G coverage) and a network that has optimal indoor coverage“. Compatibility with both network generations would have been more interesting for the future.

The Bbox Ultym Fiber offer is 42.99 euros per month for one year, then 47.99 euros per month thereafter. If you already have a Bouygues Telecom mobile plan or you take one with your Bbox, the cost of the subscription does not increase after one year and remains at 42.99 euros per month.
