A paramedic knocked down a cyclist during an accident on a road in Oregon, United States, before charging him a fee of 1,800 US dollars (2,500 CAD) to transport him to a hospital.
William Hoesch was riding his bike in the town of Rainier when the vehicle hit him head-on in October 2022. His nose was broken and his bicycle was crushed, the local site reported Oregon Live.
The driver of the emergency vehicle, which was traveling less than 15 km/h, stopped immediately to pick up the 71-year-old man.
If the driver thought he was doing a good deed to repair his actions, this decision cost the victim dearly. Mr. Hoesch was shocked to learn that the hospital had charged him a fee for the ambulance, according to the American media.
In addition to these costs, the hospital claimed US$100,000 in medical expenses from him.
The man also suffered permanent injuries.
Mr. Hoesch has since filed a lawsuit against the Columbia River Fire and Rescue Department. He is suing them for US$997,000 (nearly 1.4 million CAD) for the pain suffered by the accident as well as for reimbursement of medical expenses.
The paramedics did not want to respond to the requests of the Oregon Live.
