“It’s as if we had put a lid on the region”: why the Nord – Pas-de-Calais has not seen the sun since the beginning of November

Do you feel like you haven't seen the sun in a while? It's normal! Since the end of October, and even more so at the beginning of November, we have hardly seen the sun. To be precise, according to the readings from the three Météo stations in the region, it is in the West that we are suffering the most: had no hours of sunshine, nothing, nada. Le Touquet had three hours of sunshine and , six (all concentrated on one day, November 4).

We live in the North and it’s November, not so surprising, do you think? Even compared to other years, the situation is much worse. In November, there are normally between 65 and 75 hours of sunshine in the region. During the first week, we should therefore have had around fifteen hours of sunshine. Moreover, in 2022 in the same week, we saw the sun for around twenty hours and in 2023, between 3 and 6 p.m.

“Fog and mist in the morning, then cloudy weather all day”

But why is the weather so bad? “ We are in a situation of anticyclonic blocking », Explains Thomas Courmont, consulting meteorologist, based in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Concretely, a situation of anticyclonic blocking, in winter, it can give sunshine, but in winter, it generally gives “ fog and mist in the morning, then cloudy weather all day »

« The ground cools during anticyclonic nights in the absence of cloud cover, the cold air, pressed to the ground by the high pressures under the warmer air above it, can cause condensation », Details Météo-France.

« The cold air is at low level, rather heavy. It's as if we've put a lid on the area, there's no wind, nothing moves, the humid air doesn't move, all the particles stay where they are “. And when will it get better? Not right away. “ It has to be unlocked, we still have a few days left “, explains the meteorologist “ we don't really know how it will develop, we are still under very high pressure “. Translation: we're not going to see the sun again right away.
