The government plans to postpone the indexation of pensions to inflation by 6 months, from January 1 to July 1, 2025, which would save 4 billion euros out of the 60 billion savings envisaged in the budget.
But Prime Minister Michel Barnier said he was “open” to other solutions from MPs during the autumn budget debates.
“I think that indeed the wealthiest retirees could be called upon to contribute (…) but I believe that we should not touch small pensions,” warned Yaël Braun-Pivet, keen not to “make it more precarious “retirees with the lowest pensions.
The rebellious president of the Assembly’s Finance Committee, Éric Coquerel, said he was opposed to this government proposal, believing that “retirees must be exempt”.
“Reducing the income of retirees is not only an injustice, but it is economic nonsense,” he continued on RTL. “That means that you are taking away four billion from popular consumption.”
On the probable difficulties in having the 2025 budget adopted by a fragmented National Assembly, Ms. Braun-Pivet affirmed that she “does not rule out the hypothesis that the budget could be voted on in the National Assembly”.
While remaining aware of the probability of seeing the government use article 49.3 of the Constitution to have it adopted without a vote, even if it means exposing itself to a motion of censure.
