The expansion of the Gran Jonquera shopping centre does not only have negative impacts in the Pyrénées-Orientales.

Ironically, while the big brands are increasingly pushed out of the new spaces available in the commercial areas around , they are setting up shop… on the other side of the border. And still not in the central city of the Pyrénées-Orientales!

Thus, we remember that last May, Primark had been excluded from the Salanca shopping area in Claira by a decision of the planning commission. A project around which the mayor of Claira had announced the presence of Zara.

Excluded from Perpignan, not from the people of Perpignan

Rejected, the project will therefore not see the light of day and there will be no Zara on the outskirts of Perpignan. But the brand is nevertheless getting closer to its French clientele since it has announced that it will close its two sales areas (Zara women and Zara men) located in the heart of Figueres to integrate the extension of the Gran Jonquera shopping center, a few kilometers further north.

And so here is Zara setting up shop less than 30 minutes from Perpignan.

As reported by L’Indépendant on Monday, September 16, the Gran Jonquera complex of the Escudero group is expanding again and will open its giant extension on October 10, making La Jonquera even more the center of local hyperconsumption.

A big group to replace Zara?

As a reminder, French customers represent 70% of visitors to the Gran Jonquera since its opening in 2013 in its “outlet” format (clearance).

Our colleagues from Diari de Girona announced this Monday, the departure of Zara from Figueres but also the arrival of other brands of the Inditex group like Bershka or Stradivarius. Mango, Adidas, Toni Pons, JD or Julia Young are also announced in Gran Jonquera.

The city of Figueres, for its part, is suffering the blow of Zara’s departure from its historic heart, which seemed to be regaining some colour after years of gloom. However, the municipality assured the Diari de Girona that it already had a large chain ready to take over the premises soon to be left vacant by Zara.
