The Commana book box was installed between 2015 or 2016. It will soon celebrate its tenth anniversary… The concept appeared in 2001 in the United States, although as early as the 1990s, German artists had attempted a micro- external library, a real success. The idea has spread across the world.
More than 10,000 boxes in the territory
In France, their number has reportedly increased fivefold since 2017, with more than 10,000 boxes throughout the country. Anita and Philippe Plouzané are at the origin of that of Commana, set up under the magistracy of Francis Estrabeau. They say: “At the time, I was a teacher in a high school in Normandy working with Bac pro carpentry students. The establishment received two orders for book boxes. I proposed a third to the municipality of Commana, where I am based, which seized the opportunity.”
Ideally installed between the two squares of the town, on the wall of the town hall, formerly the Le Saint room, sheltered by an awning, the small, modest box attracts regular visitors with its popular or rare treasures, for children or adults: a lasting success.
