more than 900 people executed in 2023, denounces the UN

At least 901 people would have been executed in Iran in 2024, including around 40 in a single week in December, deplored the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, on Tuesday January 7. “It is very worrying that the number of people subject to the death penalty in Iran is increasing year by year”he commented, estimating that“It is high time that Iran puts an end to this wave of executions”.

At least 853 people were executed in 2023 in Iran, according to the high commissioner.

According to the UN statement, most executions in 2024 were for drug-related offenses, but dissidents and people linked to the 2022-2023 protests were also executed.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights also reports an increase in the number of women executed. Human rights activists accuse Iranian authorities of using the death penalty to instill fear in society, especially since 2022.
