The unions have repeatedly made it known that without strong action from Ministers Valérie Glatigny (MR) and Elisabeth Degryse (Les Engagés) in charge of Compulsory Education and Higher Education respectively, the actions would intensify with a risk of disrupting the education of students. “Since Covid, we have made sure to affect children’s education as little as possible. But it is endangered by the MR-Engagé plan with its cost-saving measures. A strike notice of unlimited duration has been filed from of January 6 to cover any action and strike”insists Adrien Rosman, permanent Setca-SEL.
Counting Day
Work stoppages will be announced as soon as classes resume. “The first part of the month will be devoted to the program decree which mainly affects the qualification. On January 15, we will focus on the job losses announced by the government and which are strongly minimized.indicates Luc Toussaint, community president of CGSP-Enseignement.
Education crisis and qualification reform: “There will be job losses, between 400 and 500 fewer teachers”
The date was not chosen by chance. It’s counting day: the number of students registered will determine the supervision for the following year. “We will be able to quantify the loss of employment in the qualification. Minister Valérie Glatigny seems convinced that the shortage will solve everything, but this is false as long as there is no real support plan. It is necessary to distinguish the function from the title to exercise it. Today, a teacher who teaches secondary education cannot work in fundamental education”underlines Roland Lahaye. “We are fed up with the lecturing people hiding behind savings that will not come to fruition. We’ll pay for it later.”
Two days of strike
The CPD’s measures, notably the end of appointments, also give rise to discontent and concern. “Young people do not want a permanent contract but faster stabilization”underlines Adrien Rosman.
“Great fears for the future” of education: more than 300 directors expected Monday before the minister’s office
On January 27, teachers will demonstrate in the streets of Brussels. January 28 will be marked by local and regional actions. “Teaching is exhausted. First there was a crisis of confidence. Then we had distrust. Today, we have reached anger. The government affects teachers and students. Certain students are banned, because they are adults, access to education and citizenship training, I have never experienced that. This is to misunderstand the school and those who attend it. It’s simply despicable!”points out the union. “There are federations of parents and students who have contacted us. There is anger at all levels. The building is on fire on every floor! As soon as the student’s rights are touched, everyone is angry. This is not worthy of a 21st century society.”
