Opposition between Warsaw and Budapest over Ukraine

Warsaw – a loyal ally of Kyiv – has publicly criticized Budapest for its relations with Moscow, while Viktor Orbán accused Poland of hypocrisy for its stance on the Russian invasionclaiming that the government of Donald Tusk considered the Hungarians as enemies.

Another point of contention has been Poland’s pro-EU stance under Donald Tusk in the face of rising anti-EU rhetoric and threats from his Hungarian counterpart.

During the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, Viktor Orbán has repeatedly opposed EU sanctions against Russia and made a highly criticized visit to Moscowwhere he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin as part of what he called a “peace mission.”

The Hungarian prime minister was also criticized by the European Parliament for meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing shortly afterwards.

During its second six-month term as head of the EU Council, Poland will focus on strengthening security and defense under the slogan “Security, Europe”, Warsaw said.
