“Syria’s disastrous situation requires political solutions so that its problems are resolved in a lasting manner,” pleaded the UN deputy special envoy for Syria, Najat Rochdi, during a meeting of the Security Council.

In this context, she reported several incidents that have occurred in recent months and an increase in attacks by the terrorist group ISIL in central and northern Syria.

The UN official estimated that the challenges facing Syria could not be “resolved in a sustainable manner without a meaningful political process facilitated by the UN to implement Resolution 2254 (of the Security Council) which realizes the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people and restores the sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity of Syria.

Regarding the humanitarian crisis in the country, Najat Rochdi said conditions remain in “strong deterioration”, adding that Syrians need unrestricted access to humanitarian aid in all its forms, including beyond borders and front lines.

She also noted that 174,000 Syrians have been displaced over the past year, according to reports from the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR). These reports further mention that 7.2 million civilians in Syria are internally displaced alongside 6.4 million refugees.

“We must intensify our efforts to find a lasting solution,” she insisted, calling for tackling the problems that “hinder the safe, dignified and voluntary return of refugees”.
