Summer vacation is fast approaching and so is the desire to travel. Millions of tourists will flock to Mediterranean beaches to enjoy the sun and beaches. But a very touristy European country appreciated by Belgians has just made an important decision for its beaches.

This is Greece. A destination of choice for its turquoise waters and pleasant weather during the summer, the Hellenic Republic has already implemented this year a climate tax which will apply to all accommodation rentals and will cost you up to 10 euros per day and per person for a villa.

As for beaches, Greece wants to ban deckchairs in certain places.

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Greek Prime Minister, wants to counter overtourism by developing the country’s beaches which are, most of the time, taken over by hotels, bars and restaurants. To give you an idea, from June to August, if you wish to reserve a deckchair at the Super Paradise Beach Club from Mykonos, you will have to pay 35 euros per person to be placed in the first rows facing the sea. Same thing on the Naxos side, where prices are around 20 euros.

Little known and only accessible after a two-day trek, this Inca archaeological site is considered “the sacred little sister” of Machu Picchu

The local authorities want to free 70% of the beaches so that tourists can come and enjoy the place with their towels for free. Deckchairs will also be banned at 85% in certain nature reserves or even completely banned in rare places.

For deckchair rentals, they will need to position their deckchairs at least four meters from the sea.

These new measures follow the demands of locals who launched “the towel movement”.
