Morocco recently highlighted its commitment to artificial intelligence during a public session of the African Union Peace and Security Council in Addis Ababa. Under the theme “Looking into the future: artificial intelligence and its impact on peace and security in Africa”, the Moroccan delegation highlighted the important initiatives taken by the Kingdom in this area.

Morocco particularly highlighted its active participation in the development of the first UN resolution on artificial intelligence, entitled “Seizing the opportunities for safe, secure and reliable artificial intelligence systems for development”. Adopted by 123 United Nations Member States on March 21, 2024 and initially co-sponsored by Morocco and the United States, this adoption demonstrates Morocco’s crucial interest in this technology.

Taking advantage of the opportunity, the delegation recalled that the call of King Mohammed VI for the development of new technologies, expressed in his speech on the occasion of the Throne Day on July 30, 2008, was a catalyst for numerous initiatives in terms of training and research & development in artificial intelligence in the Kingdom. The international artificial intelligence center “AI Movement”, based at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, was highlighted as an example of Moroccan innovation. This center, the first of its kind in Africa, plays a leading role in research and knowledge sharing with other African countries.

In addition to academic and institutional efforts, Morocco organized the first edition of the High-Level Forum on Artificial Intelligence in Africa in Rabat, from June 3 to 5, 2024. Placed under the theme “Artificial Intelligence as a lever for development in Africa” and in partnership with UNESCO, this event saw the participation of representatives from more than 30 countries, including around fifteen African countries.

The Moroccan delegation concluded by emphasizing that through these initiatives, the potential of artificial intelligence allows developing countries to save time, reduce costs and optimize human and energy resources, contributing favorably to peace. and security in Africa.
