“We believe that the people can save the people”: huge surge of solidarity in Spain after the floods

In Spain, dramatic floods left more than 200 dead. The images are terrible, the Valencia region is devastated. The whole country is marked and an incredible surge of solidarity is taking place. Residents and volunteers flock to support disaster relief operations.

An enthusiastic and motivated crowd descends on Valencia. Volunteers come from all over Spain, equipped with their brooms and provisions, to lend a helping hand to those who have lost everything.

We go to Albal, a two-hour walk away. It’s the last city that receives absolutely nothing. We go there because we believe that only the people can save the people. We are united“, testifies one of them.

I go to Paiporta to help people with shovels and everything I can and with all my heart“, adds another.

This help is particularly awaited in the towns and villages frozen in the mud, but after three days of anguish, anger mixes with despair: “There are so many deaths, what do you want me to say. No matter how much help we get, it’s not enough. We need a lot of help, and even with help, it won’t be fixed in a month or two.

In the general chaos, looters attack damaged businesses. And in stores, certain foodstuffs are starting to run out. As far as Valencia, residents are struggling to obtain water. “It’s very difficult to find water. We received false information saying that the water would be cut off in Valencia. People went crazy and emptied their food and water supplies.

This Friday evening, many Spanish villages remain cut off from the world. They are inaccessible due to collapsed roads and bridges. The needs are immense.
