Volodymyr Zelensky has decided to raise his voice against China, to the great delight of Russian commentators. Invited to the Shangri-La defense forum in Singapore, the Ukrainian president openly accused Beijing of wanting to sabotage the Swiss peace initiative: not only by ignoring the invitation to participate in the Bürgenstock conference on June 15 and 16, but also by dissuading other countries from going there. Almost identical accusations that he had already made against Moscow. “It is regrettable that a country as powerful and independent as China is a tool in the hands of Putin,” he added. In barely veiled terms, he also criticized China for supplying Russia with components that could be used to manufacture its weapons, something the Chinese authorities have always denied.

With these words, much commented on, kyiv now seems to renounce any attempt to rely on the Asian giant to promote its “peace formula” in Switzerland. But in Moscow, we see above all the result of the spectacular Russian-Chinese rapprochement thanks to the war in Ukraine. “Hats off to Beijing, and shame on Zelensky!”, shouts political scientist Sergei Markov on his Telegram channel, for whom this latest development now demonstrates that Beijing is no longer content with supporting Russia but that it is openly “for the war against Ukraine.
