“My 8th visit to Kyiv comes as the cold season is about to begin and Russia continues to target energy infrastructure”declared the head of the European executive on the social network X. Ursula von der Leyen announced on Thursday that a sum of 160 million euros from the product of Russian assets frozen was to be transferred to Ukraine to enable it to meet its humanitarian and energy needs this winter.

Since the start of the Ukrainian conflict in February 2022, Russia has taken offline around 9 gigawatts of electricity generation capacity in Ukraine, the combined capacity of the three Baltic republics, according to the Commission President. “Our goal is to restore a capacity of 2.5 GW, which is 15% of Ukraine’s needs”Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday.
