Nintendo has opted for continuity regarding its future console: the Switch 2 will take the place of the Switch in 2025, with the same philosophy. There are still some notable differences.
It’s now official: the Nintendo Switch 2 will be available in 2025. As its name shows, the new console from the Japanese firm is the direct continuation of the one it succeeds – which is unprecedented.
The Switch 2 is therefore an evolution of the Switch. She will also be able to play her games, thanks to backward compatibility. While there is still much to discover (the launch catalog, probably with Mario Kart 9), Nintendo’s short presentation already allows us to detect differences between the Switch and the Switch 2, while waiting to discover more in April, then to try it during an event organized in Paris.
What differentiates the Switch and Switch 2
The Switch 2 is bigger and less colorful than the Switch
The Switch 2 presentation video starts with images of the Switch, which expands to make room for the console that will succeed it. For Nintendo, the message is simple: expect a bigger console (will children be able to adapt to it?), which should be confirmed by the measurements once the technical sheet is published by Nintendo.
Another change: the design is more sober, with a dark finish for the most part, punctuated by a few touches of color. It’s a change from the more pop aesthetic of the first Switch, with its Joy-Con available in multiple colors. In addition, the Switch 2 looks better finished, looking less “toy” than the previous console.
The Switch 2 has a bigger screen
Who says larger console says… larger screen, with much thinner edges. Nintendo did not specify the size or the on-board technology. Does the Switch 2 have an OLED screen, like the last revision of the Switch? We hope so, otherwise it would be a step backwards.
The Switch 2 dock is prettier (like the console)
The aesthetic evolution of the Switch 2 does not only benefit the tablet and the Joy-Con. The dock, which allows you to connect the console to a television, also has a better design, much more accomplished than the old one – as evidenced by the rounded edges. We will therefore be less ashamed to display it on our TV cabinet.
The “Switch 2 kickstand” is more practical
Do you remember the kickstand from the very first Switch? A small piece of plastic used to hold the console upright (for the table format), it must be in a very bad state today if you bought your Switch in 2017. Nintendo had revised its copy for the Switch OLED, with a large support ajustable offering several tilt angles. The Switch 2 is inspired by this with a format reminiscent of the letter U. Here again, it’s prettier – and practical.
The Switch 2 gains a USB-C port
Good news: the Switch 2 is equipped, on the upper edge, with a USB-C port. It is added to the one at the bottom, already present on the original Switch. The benefits are clear: being able to be freer in your connections to recharge and/or use an accessory while filling the battery.
The Switch 2 Joy-Cons are more advanced
Small controllers packed with technology, the Joy-Con of the Switch are as surprising as they are frustrating – because of their questionable reliability. Will those of the Switch 2 be more robust? We hope so. In any case, the Switch 2 Joy-Cons gain several interesting developments: magnetic fixation (rather than with a rail), optical sensor and new button for the right Joy-Con. All in all, nothing but positives.
