Although the Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch continue to enjoy good reception, they have all been outperformed on Amazon in 2024, the Meta Quest 3S establishing itself as the best-selling console of the year on the platform. This is an impressive feat for this virtual reality headset, especially considering it only launched in October.
The Meta Quest 3S is the more accessible variant of the Meta Quest 3, which significantly reduces the price at the expense of some specifications. Although virtual reality has not yet entered mainstream gaming habits, it seems that its attractive price and the range of games available were enough to make the Meta Quest 3S a bestseller on Amazon during 2024.

According to Amazon’s bestseller list for 2024, the Meta Quest 3S was the best-selling console in the video game category. It was ranked 11th among all video game sales of the year, dominated mostly by gift cards and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. The PlayStation 5 slim was placed 17th, while the Nintendo Switch was 53rd. Xbox consoles failed to enter the top 80, although its accessories appeared there. Note also the absence of the PlayStation 5 Pro in this list. The only devices that outperformed the Meta Quest 3S were a Nintendo-branded microSDXC card and the PlayStation DualSense wireless controller, in 8th and 9th positions, respectively.
Unfortunately for Sony, its own virtual reality device, the PlayStation VR 2, does not appear in this listing on Amazon. Although the PSVR also has a wealth of interesting games, the Meta Quest 3S stands out in that it can be used without any external devices, which might appeal to some users. This allows users to move around freely, as opposed to PlayStation VR which is connected by cable, while avoiding the need to invest in a powerful console or PC to operate the device.
Interestingly, the list also includes the Meta Quest 2, which came in at number 27, while the original Meta Quest 3 didn’t make the top 80. This could suggest that VR users prefer devices when those- These are offered at a more attractive price. With production of the Meta Quest 2 ceasing and the Nintendo Switch 2 expected to release in 2025, it will be interesting to see how these rankings evolve for 2025. If Nintendo manages to replicate the success of the original Switch, it is very likely that it once again dominates the video game sales market on Amazon. Only time can tell us what will come out on top in 2025, but the 2024 results already give a good indication of growing interest in virtual reality.
