Rockets and Pistons players face unexpected power outage during Houston duel

Houston, we have a lighting problem.

Monday’s morning game between the Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons was unexpectedly interrupted as the lights at the Toyota Center flickered on and off near the end of the first quarter.

As Pistons rookie Ron Holland attempted a three-pointer, Pistons voice George Blaha commented, ‘Ron Holland is open in the corner and he’s making a three-pointer.’ It was at this point that the arena fell into near darkness, leaving the audience surprised.

After a short pause, Blaha joked: ‘The Pistons are knocking down shots from distance. He turns off the lights. It’s a shot that puts out the lights.’

Shortly after the lights were restored, the game resumed, with Detroit ultimately securing a convincing 107-96 victory. Additional details regarding this incident from the Rockets are awaited.

Cavaliers vs. Suns Game Preview: Key Info and Predictions for January 20

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time a basketball game has been interrupted by darkness. A similar incident occurred during a 2021 playoff game between the Philadelphia 76ers and Atlanta Hawks, when State Farm Arena lost power near the end of the game.

On social media, fans shared light-hearted references to Vicki Lawrence’s song, “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia,” but an even more famous blackout episode occurred during Super Bowl XLVII in New . Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh was facing his brother Jim, coach of the San Francisco 49ers, when a sudden breakdown halted the game’s momentum.

With the Ravens leading 28-6 thanks to some impressive plays, the excruciating break plunged the players and coaches into a semi-dark stadium for 34 minutes. Accepting the challenge, Coach Harbaugh motivated his team with a memorable speech, saying, ‘I’m going to remind you of this Motown song. There’s no mountain high enough, and there’s no valley low enough, and nothing will stop us from winning this championship. Not that, and nothing else. We’re going to win this game, no matter how long it takes.’

Motivated by his words, the Ravens emerged victorious with a score of 34-31.
