The Kernault manor in Mellac (Finistère), dating from the 15th century and classified as a historic monument, was ravaged this Sunday, January 12 in the morning by a fire, announced the Breton department.
“This morning, a fire broke out in the framework and destroyed a large part of the building which had been under restoration since 2020. The intervention mobilized 77 firefighters and numerous fire-fighting machines. the fire”, indicated the prefecture, specifying that the flames had not caused any casualties.
“The prefect particularly praised the work of the firefighters which made it possible to contain the fire, to avoid spreading to the chapel adjoining the damaged building and thus to preserve a large part of the heritage elements of interest,” adds the press release. .
“Very bad news”
Maël De Calan, president of the Breton department which owns the manor located between Concarneau and Lorient, spoke of “very bad news”.
“Thousands of visitors pass through the gates of the manor and the doors of the garden every year, which is why the department had just invested 4.6 million euros including tax in restoration work on the Kernault home,” said Maël From Calan, who promised that the mansion would “rise from the ashes.”
