To continue to bring the Charlie spirit to new generations, ten years after the attack of January 7, 2015, the editorial staff of the newspaper joined forces with 14 high schoolssince September, to develop a new issue distributed in all establishments in the Grand Est.
To complete the journal, 14 high school students were gathered around a large table, with sketches and drawings scattered everywhere. Everyone had come with their own ideas for caricatures, hoping to make the front page in front of everyone’s eyes. by Foolz and Riss, the cartoonists of Charlie Hebdo.
“I drew high school students who have a piñata with the heads of the Kouachi brothers and they hit it with a pencil to “celebrate” the birthday,” said Gaston, 17, at the microphone of RTL. “Maybe we can think of a big cake, with ten years on it, and a personality blowing out candles that represent several terrorists“, suggested another student.
Riss also did not fail to give them advice: “When you make a cover, it’s good when there is a character who embodies! When there is a face. A title, a slogan, and then that’s all. A punch. What do you have to say?”
An awareness
For this generation, which was very young at the time of the attack, this project is a real wake-up call. “I even remember drawing the “Je suis Charlie” logo all alone in my room. And there, I drew in front of Riss,” confided Lou, seven years old at the time of the tragedy. Enzo, a comrade, realized that this project “allows us to begin to remove taboos and to be proud of this freedom that we have in our country“.
“They must dare. They must not be afraid to draw, to express themselves. Going towards them is a way of telling them that they have the right. Charlie spirit, it starts in middle and high schoolwhen you want to mess around with friends,” recalled Riss.
Dozens of caricatures on ecology, the far right, feminism, terrorism or religion were produced by the students. The newspaper will be distributed in 22,000 copies this Tuesday, January 7, in all high schools in the Grand Est region.
