It is a meeting which is already arousing interest as part of the qualifiers for the next African Women’s Cup of Nations. Togo, which will face Djibouti in the first round, will have to face a team led by a former Togolese coach: Jonas Kokou Komla.
The Togolese technician, former coach of ASCK, was officially named, this Monday, January 6, coach of the Djibouti women’s team. He signed his contract in the presence of Souleiman Hassan Waberi, the president of the Djiboutian Football Federation (FDF) and vice-president of the African Football Confederation (CAF). The latter expressed his great satisfaction with the arrival of Komla, whom he considers to be a valuable reinforcement for the development of women’s football in the country.
At 49 years old, Jonas Kokou Komla is a technician who knows Djibouti well, having already worked there with the youth selections, notably as coach of the under-20 team between 2018 and 2020. After his departure from Djibouti, he returned to Togo to lead ASCK, before taking the reins of Togo’s U20 national team in 2020. In 2021, following the resignation of Claude Le Roy, he was named interim coach of the Togo senior national team for the 2022 World Cup qualifying matches.
Today, he returns to Djibouti, this time to take up the challenge of the women’s team. Komla’s mission will be to guide her new protégés during the Morocco 2024 Women’s CAN qualifiers, with a first major obstacle: Togo, her native country.
Jonas Kokou Komla seems particularly motivated by this new challenge. According to the FDF, the coach clarified that he had agreed to return to Djibouti because of the relationship of trust he maintains with the country, which he considers as a second family. “The coach affirmed that he agreed to return to Djibouti, because he feels at home like family and above all motivated by the actions and efforts of the president of the FDF. He also expressed his enthusiasm to serve Djiboutian football by coaching the women’s national teams,” reads an official press release. “Jonas is an expert who excels in his field and thus he will strengthen the technical potential of the federation. Especially since the latter has great experience in the field of women’s football,” declared the FDF.
The first round of the Morocco 2024 women’s CAN qualifiers will take place from February 17 to 26, 2024. Togo and Djibouti will therefore face each other on this occasion, in what promises to be a clash rich in emotions and challenges for both. nations.
