Crif warns against any “rehabilitation”
The death of French far-right figure Jean-Marie Le Pen “should not mark the beginning of his rehabilitation”, said Crif president Yonathan Arfi on Tuesday. “Condemned several times by the courts, Jean-Marie Le Pen is the first to have given political support to anti-Semitism, racism and negationism after the war,” denounced the president of the Representative Council on the social network Jewish institutions in France.
Yonathan Arfi also warned that “the fight against his ideas does not end with the disappearance of the man who carried them”. Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of the National Front, died on Tuesday at the age of 96, sparking many reactions.
Several left-wing leaders denounced that – too laudatory in their eyes – of Prime Minister François Bayrou. The latter spoke of Mr. Le Pen as “a figure of French political life”, beyond “the controversies which were his favorite weapon and the necessary clashes on the merits”.
