Russia claimed on Monday that its forces had taken control of the town of Kurakhovo, a key stronghold and logistics hub of Ukraine in the Donetsk region.

In a statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said the town was defended by around 15,000 Ukrainian troops:

“The liberation of Kurakhovo deprived the kyiv regime of the possibility of bombarding the civilian population of Donetsk with artillery systems. The takeover of Kurakhovo significantly hindered the logistical and technical support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the direction of Donetsk,” the ministry said.

The ministry also said that the Russian army would accelerate its advance into eastern Ukraine after the fall of Kurakhovo.

Ukraine has not yet commented on this statement, and the current context of conflict makes verification by independent sources impossible.

As a reminder, on February 24, 2022, Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine, which provoked multiple reactions internationally, notably from the European Union and the United States, as well as the imposition of sanctions. financial and economic support to Moscow and military and financial support to kyiv.

Russia claims to have intervened to protect the majority Russian-speaking populations in the separatist regions of Donbass, notably those of Donetsk and Lugansk which wanted to obtain independence from Ukraine and which ended up being annexed by Russia following two referendums held in September 2022 in these territories.

Moscow also poses, as a prerequisite for putting an end to its operation, Ukraine’s renunciation of its plans to join military entities and alliances, including NATO, and the adoption of a status of “total neutrality”, which kyiv considers to be an “interference in its sovereignty”.

Since August 6, 2024, Ukrainian troops have been carrying out a large-scale operation on Russian soil, particularly in the Kursk region, bordering Ukraine.
